Nava is one of the great gay Chicano writers. El chico de oro was his first novel and introduced us to a gay Chicano detective (Henry Rios) who moved through the California landscape crossing the borders of class and sexuality. Henry Rios appeared in several other mystery novels by Nava. To date, this is the only in Spanish and it deserves a much wider audience.
