The Tree of Knowledge belongs to Pio Baroja’s trilogy called The Race (La Raza). This novel about education and reflection on the human condition became an instant classic within the Spanish literary tradition and especially as a psychological work for speculations by the young. It relates the life of Andrés Hurtado, medical student and later village doctor and researcher, a life which is not self-explanatory, which does not have a meaning or absolute reasons to justify it, and in which knowledge and responsibilities are not sources of pleasure but of pain.
