When I read it, I was a student in Spain in the year 1978 or 1979. It impressed me so much that every night I dreamt that I was one character or another from the book. Gironella provides the reader not only an understanding, but also a knowledge, an authentic flavor, as it were, of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939.
