In my opinion, this is the greatest novel of 20th century Spanish literature, much more important for the style of its telling and how it provides glimpses of the author's mind than for what it tells. Inward-looking, following the aesthetic theories of Ortega y Gasset, its narrative techniques preceded the French nouveau roman by many years.
