Élmer Mendoza presents a novel which has all the requirements of the crime fiction genre: a detective, a murder, a list of suspects, a corrupt milieu, and an ending which is symptomatic of a skeptical take on Mexican reality. Vengeance, not the law, is the victor. This is an excellent example of what critics have dubbed narcoliterature.
