The jury praised the writer from Barcelona as “a provider of happiness for readers” throughout his five-decade career.
Somewhat hoarse and with his usual smile, Eduardo Mendoza arrived at the Jaume Fuster Library to meet the media not two hours after being named the winner of the Princesa de Asturias Award for Literature.
In May 1975, a 32-year-old Mendoza published his first novel, “La verdad sobre el caso Savolta,” reissued by Seix Barral to commemorate his 50th birthday.
Since then, Mendoza has written some twenty novels, several essays, plays.... A vast production that has earned him being described as a “purveyor of happiness” by the jury of the Princesa de Asturias. “I do not know if I am, at least a provider of happiness for myself, yes.
