Yolanda Arencibia, professor of Spanish Philology and expert on the figure of Benito Pérez Galdós, dies at 85

She joined the Canary Islands Academy of Language in 2001, leaving behind an extensive legacy as a teacher and researcher specializing in 18th and 19th-century Spanish literature.

Yolanda Arencibia Santana, professor of Spanish Philology, one of the most renowned experts on the figure of Benito Pérez Galdós and director of the Chair of the same name since its creation in 1995, has died at the age of 85, reports Europa Press.

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) deeply regrets the death of Arencibia. She was a university professor since 1982, first at Las Palmas University College and later at the ULPGC, where she held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Philology from its creation in 1990 to 1999.

Furthermore, according to a press release from the ULPGC, she was the first woman to achieve the rank of professor in the field of Philology at the ULPGC. Professor emeritus since 2010, the year of her retirement, she continued her activity at this institution as a researcher and as director of the Chair.
