Gustavo Rodríguez, 2023 Alfaguara Novel Prize for “Cien cuyes”

The Peruvian writer Gustavo Rodríguez has been awarded the 2023 Alfaguara Novel Prize, endowed with $175,000 dollars (approximately 162,000 euros) and a sculpture by Martín Chirino, for the work “Cien Cuyes,” presented under the title “Largo viaje hacia el adios.”

The jury, chaired by the Argentine writer Claudia Piñeiro and made up of the Spanish journalist and writer Javier Rodríguez Marcos, the Argentine editor and translator Carolina Orloff, the bookseller of Letras Corsarias, in Salamanca, Rafael Arias García, the Spanish writer Juan Tallón, and the editorial director of Alfaguara, Pilar Reyes (with voice but no vote), has declared the novel the winner by majority. The novel will be on sale in bookstores next May in the United States.

The jury has highlighted that "Cien Cuyes is a tragicomic novel taking place in today's Lima, dealing with one of the great conflicts of our time: we are a society increasingly living longer and increasingly hostile to the elderly; a paradox that Gustavo Rodríguez addresses with skill and humor. A moving book whose main characters care, are cared for, and defend dignity to its ultimate consequences.”
