The Urbana School District decides to maintain bilingual Spanish classes at Leal and Dr. Preston Williams Elementary Schools.

The Urbana school board has decided not to combine its two bilingual Spanish programs into one school: Leal Elementary.

The move would have brought about 170 students from Leal Elementary School's monolingual English classes to Dr. Preston L. Williams Jr. Elementary School and other nearby schools. Approximately 160 DPW dual language students would have moved to Leal.

At the District 116 Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, board members reached a consensus to keep the status quo for now. The vote on the issue, which was scheduled to take place next week, was cancelled.
