Seminar: "Torres: A 150 Anniversary Celebration"

02/06/2022
The venerable Torres winery was founded 150 years ago. Since then it has remained family owned. In the last 50 years Torres has been one of the leaders of the wine revolution that has transformed the wines of Spain. First they pioneered the introduction of international varieties creating wines like the iconic Mas La Plana. More recently they have developed an ambitious program to rescue forgotten local varieties culminating in the creation of their acclaimed Grans Muralles. In addition they have expanded to other wine regions like Priorat, Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rías Baixas. This wine seminar is a celebration of Torres’ achievements and we will taste 12 of their most distinctive wines.

exhibition: "Language in the street. 400 years of linguistic landscape "

06/06/2022 - 10/09/2022
We walk around the city talking, and without realizing it, we never stop reading. This exhibition recovers a part of the writing that was visible in the Spanish streets from 1500 to 1900. Advertisements, posters and banners formed the linguistic landscape seen everywhere in a mostly illiterate society. To sell, to offend, to entertain, to regulate or to subvert regulation were some of the reasons that the street became text. When a community has a written culture, it always overflows the private sphere and can be seen in the public space as an expression of power and of counter-power. The historical linguistic landscape has been almost completely lost; only chance or careful research have allowed us to preserve some documents, such as those shown in this exhibition.

performance: "La Indiana"

09/06/2022
A play that alludes to the cultural legacy emanating from the frequent trips made by so many across the Atlantic, from the Canary Islands to Cuba and back. Starring Ms. Santana herself, the plot revolves around Antonia, the playwright’s great-grandmother, a woman from Canarias who emigrates to Cuba at the turn of the 20th century (1905). After many years in Cuba, she becomes a widow and decides to return to Gran Canaria with her five children, earning the name of “La Indiana”, a nickname that was usually reserved for men. Antonia is the inspiration for a story that aims to capture a pivotal time during the Canarian migration to Cuba at the beginning of the last century, when many stood astride a cross-cultural junction, and later opted to return to the Canary Islands.
