José Manuel López de Abiada, benevolence and great literature

The writer and literary critic dies at the age of 77. The best contemporary writers all sat in his classroom in Bern.

The name of Professor José Manuel López de Abiada has been present for decades in the field of Spanish literary criticism, which is to say global, because works such as Imágenes de España en culturas y literaturas europeas (siglos XVI-XVII), from 2004, or Entre el ocio y el negocio: Industria editorial y literatura en la España de los 90 (2001) are outstanding examples of comparative literature that Georges Steiner would have liked just as much as Borges himself. It is unusual that there have not been more editions, at least in Spain.

Of course, the biography of this Cantabrian professor, who died on Sunday at the age of 77, is linked to the dark post-war period and forced emigration. What happens is that, in his case, the one who started out as a caddy for Swiss golfers turned out to be a self-made man.
