According to the Federación de Gremios de Editores, audio sales account for 0.1% of digital sales, although there are currently about 3,000 titles in circulation. However, most now agree that this number is likely to increase in 2017.
The forthcoming arrival of one of the sector’s most important multinationals, Audible — owned by Amazon — and the Scandinavian enterprise, Storytel (in September), with an additional push by one of the largest publishing groups internationally, Penguin Random House — who have more titles as well as the attraction of renowned actors – are all signs of an imminent upturn.
Javier Celaya, managing director of Storytel in Spain — an original Scandinavian platform — hopes that in the next 5 years audiobooks will account for 30% of digital sales, as is already the case in the United States.”
