It is the second city to deserve this recognition in the history of this literary event. The city of Madrid will be the guest of honor at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Mexico, in 2017.

So have announced the president of FIL, Raul Padilla, and its director, Marisol Schulz, along with the mayor of Madrid, Manuel Carmena, at a ceremony held this morning in the Cecilio Rodriguez’s gardens of El Retiro Park, a few meters from the Madrid Book Fair’s booths.

"It is an honor to Madrid to participate in such an important event," stated the mayor, who praised the figure of the book as something "to reflect, to bring together ideas, create change, and even save people," she said, before remembering  Mexico’s and Spain’s  cultural ties in past years, "in times of artistic drought during the dictatorship."
