Two Women, Cristina Fernández de Cubas and Ángeles Mora, Win the National Critic Awards

The short-story book La habitación de Nona (Nona’s Room), by Cristina Fernández-Cubas (Barcelona, 1945) and the poetry compilation Ficciones para una autobiografía (Fictions for an Autobiography) by Ángeles Mora (Córdoba, 1952) ....

were the winners of the 61st edition of the National Critic Awards in the Spanish Language.

The jury of the awards, the Association of Literary Critics of Spain in Santa Cruz de la Palma, gave their verdict today and said that Fernández-Cubas is "a fundamental writer in the history of Spanish narrative," and gave also recognition to a genre, the short story, which “for many years has been on a par with the novel” in respect to quality.

Published by Tusquets, La habitación de Nona represents her author’s return to the genre after nine years of silence and the shock that represented the death of her husband, writer Carlos Trías, a personal tragedy that she tackles in one of her stories, La nueva vida (A New Life).
