Florida school district expands dual-language offerings in schools.

At Beauclerc Elementary and four other Duval public schools, students who speak English are learning half the time in Spanish, and students who are Spanish speakers are learning half the time in English.

Both groups sit in the same classrooms, learning the same work. But English speakers have the linguistic advantage half the day and Spanish speakers have it the rest of the day.

It’s called dual language immersion studies, a small but growing strategy in American education gaining a foothold in Duval County schools.

Besides Beauclerc, Duval offers dual language at San Jose and West Riverside elementary schools and at DuPont Middle School, where it is taught in sixth and seventh grades.
