The city of Barcelona to take advantage of being named "Literary City" to boost Saint Jordi's celebration's prestige.

Barcelona City's municipal authorities tendered a formal request directly to UNESCO to be recognized as "Literary City".

Berta Sureda, Barcelona's Cultural Affairs delegate, has explained that the city's plan is to take advantage of this important platform to boost "Diada de Sant Jordi"'s recognition internationally. 

April 23 is a special occasion for people in Barcelona as they get the opportunity to buy books from booksellers who offer special deals on books through a street market atmosphere. 

This celebration has proven to be a successful venture promoting reading habits among children and adults.
