Duluth, Minnesota school to introduce Spanish immersion program.

Lowell Elementary School is expected to house the Duluth school district's new Spanish immersion program beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

The district's goal is to begin the program with 75 students, divided into three classes of 25 kindergartners, said Crystal Goldman, the district's immersion specialist and English language development coordinator.

The Spanish immersion program will help the district meet the demands of the community and provide more high-quality educational programs, Goldman said.

"Spanish is the most common language spoken in the United States after English and it's the fourth most common language spoken in the world. By being bilingual or multilingual in Spanish, it creates many social and professional opportunities and creates an understanding of many Spanish-speaking cultures," she said.
