New Mexico State University Spanish literature student wins first place in national contest.

According the NMSU news department, Nicolas Cabrera, a Spanish literature student, won a state writing contest last spring, which allowed him to compete nationally.

Cabrera won first place in the creative single verse poem category at the 2015 Federation of press Women Communications contest with his piece titled “La Yerbabuena.”

The poem, written in Spanish is dedicated to Cabrera’s 92-year-old great aunt.

Cabrera will be reading his winning poem and other poems at the Tony Hillerman Library in Albuquerque on Oct. 17. The reading is free to the public.
