Puerto Rico recognizes Spanish as the island's official language.

Local senate also declared English as second official language.

“Designating Spanish as Puerto Rico’s primary and official language reinforces our cultural identity and validates the reality of more than 80% who don’t understand nor speak English. It is critical for us to give our mother language the place it disserves”, said Antonio Fas Alzamora, former president of the island’s Democratic Popular Party.

The project has a goal of overruling Law 1-1993 that had declared Spanish and English as official languages of Puerto Rico indistinctively. Fines of up to $10,000 dollars will be imposed to officials that do not comply with the new measure.
