Detroit Public Schools expand dual language, other academic programs.

Detroit Public Schools officials unveiled today plans to expand dual-language immersion programs, add a second International Baccalaureate program and offer more art, music and gym classes at some schools.

The changes are part of Emergency Manager Darnell Earley's larger restructuring effort to draw more students and boost academic performance, officials said.

Many of the initiatives are targeted toward families in southwest Detroit.

"Detroit Public Schools is headed in the right direction, and together we will make transformational change happen," Earley said.

Some highlights include:

? Neinas Elementary School will become a dual-language immersion academy with curriculum taught in English and Spanish. It will also add a sixth grade.

? The Academy of the Americas dual language immersion school will expand to include 10th grade. Upper grades may move to a new high school campus.

? Officials are in the planning stages for a new K-12 International Baccalaureate program at the Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies School (FLICS) and Renaissance High School.
