Publishers’ aggregated net revenues were up +4.9% in 2014 compared to 2013. The growth was driven primarily by Children/Young Adult and PreK-12 instructional materials.
This number includes Trade (fiction/non-fiction), K-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Education Course Materials, University Presses, etc. at a total of $15.7 billion dollars for the year, compared to $15.0 billion dollars in 2013.
Within the trade category, revenues were up +3.8% over the prior year at $7.2 billion, compared to $6.9 billion in 2013.

General Trends for 2014
• Childrens & Young Adult Books had consistent growth every month, with impressive double-digit growth over the prior month from the previous year in 11 out of 12 months.
• All categories experienced growth over the prior year, with the exception of Adult Books, which was down -1.4%; within that category, Downloaded Audio (+27.2% ) and Paperback (+2.3%) were bright spots growing compared to 2013and Hardback declined (-8.2%).
• eBooks resumed their growth in 2014, at +4.7% over 2013.
Trade Publishing Highlights:
• Downloaded Audio was the format that grew the most in 2014, with +28.7 growth over 2013
• Trade had a good December, compared to December 2013, with sales up +11.9%. In addition to the healthy Childrens and Young Adult books growth of +22.5%, Adult books also contributed to this gain, with 8.9% growth over December 2013
• Within Adult Books, Paperbacks had its best month this year, up +22.7 compared to last December; the format also did well in Childrens and Young Adult category with +38.0% growth

All figures represent publishers’ net revenue from all distribution channels (these are not retailer/consumer sales figures).
