A renewed interest in teaching young children to speak a foreign language is catching on, driven by workplace forces and demand from parents. In Baltimore County's 10 elementary schools a foreign language is being taught for the first time this year.

“Only about a quarter of elementary schools in the nation teach a foreign language. Maryland doesn't require school systems to offer any foreign language instruction until middle and high school, and most Baltimore-area school systems don't offer a comprehensive language program at the elementary level.”
