At a time when Spanish is being belittled by US authorities, Arizona State University has relaunched Editorial Bilingüe, a pioneering publisher of Chicano and Latino literature in English and Spanish,
with the aim of promoting a new generation of writers and “honoring diversity” in the United States, according to its director, Anita Huízar-Hernández, speaking to the EFE news agency.
The academic said that this initiative hopes to honor the history and diversity that exists within the Latino community in the country, especially at a time when it feels under attack due to the Trump administration's immigration policies. We want to celebrate the beauty and complexity of the Latino community in this country, she said.
The idea is to provide access to both languages and offer a reading option in Spanish dedicated to highlighting Latino culture, added the editor. 'There are people born in the United States who understand but do not read or write Spanish, and this series is an opportunity to revisit the language of their parents and grandparents,' she said.
