Natalia Castro Picón wins the Anagrama Essay Prize with a new take on the apocalypse

The Mallorcan author's first work, ‘La fiesta del fin del mundo,’ will be available in bookstores on October 29.

The 53rd Anagrama Essay Prize, worth €10,000, was awarded on Monday to ‘La fiesta del fin del mundo,’ by Mallorcan author Natalia Castro Picón.

The book was selected from 170 entries from more than 16 countries and addresses the recent period of Spanish history, from the 2008 crisis to the 2020 pandemic, with a perspective that transforms the apocalypse into an impetus to rethink the imagination in favor of social change.

“It is not a book about the future, about whether we will continue to exist or not. It is a book about the present, which is the time we have,” said Castro Picón during the announcement of the award at the Anagrama publishing house in Barcelona.
