At the roundtable discussion 'Alianzas transfronterizas para fortalecer la educación bilingüe: innovación, equidad y formación de docentes entre California y Jalisco'
(Cross-border partnerships to strengthen bilingual education: innovation, equity, and teacher training between California and Jalisco) at LéaLA, experts discussed the stigma surrounding Spanish in California education. Participating in these discussions were Leticia Leal Moya, Edgar Lampkin, and Carlos Iván Moreno, moderated by Gustavo Padilla.
Edgar Lampkin, CEO of the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), pointed out that one of the main challenges in California is the stigma attached to Spanish, historically considered an “inferior” language, despite its growing global relevance.
Leticia Leal, rector of CUTlajomulco, highlighted that nearly 40% of students worldwide do not have access to education in their mother tongue, which directly impacts their academic performance and affects migrant communities the most.
