Leire Bilbao Barruetabeña has been awarded the Spanish National Prize for Children and Young Adult Literature for 2025 for her work ‘Klera’ (Elkar), as proposed by the jury that met today.
The prize, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, is worth €30,000.
The jury chose her work ‘Klera’ for “the poetic beauty with which the author, drawing on different artistic disciplines, especially illustration, presents a proposal with an implicit commitment to culture, peace, and coexistence, addressing such raw topics as conflict, war, and death in a way that makes them understandable to children.”
The jury also emphasized that ‘Klera,’ “written with a profound lyrical charge and a powerful message, is an example and a lesson in literature without labels, interdisciplinary, deeply beautiful. A delicate and necessary piece that is rooted in the depths of human nature.”
