Cancer is a trap that even the best verse cannot escape. Antonio Rivero Taravillo (Melilla, 1963) died today in Seville, just a few days before Renacimiento published his biography of Álvaro Cunqueiro. It was the chronicle of a drama that had been announced a couple of months ago when his health began to decline despite his determination to fight, the care of his wife, Teresa, and the messages of solidarity and concern from a legion of friends who, by every means possible, conveyed their admiration and affection.
Rivero Taravillo studied English Philology at the University of Seville. He then learned Gaelic, the Irish, Welsh, and Scottish vernacular languages that inspired much of his best poetry, the trail that led him to delve deeper into writers such as James Joyce, of whom he ended up becoming one of the great commentators.
