Irene Vallejo, honorary doctorate from the UIMP in Santander

The UIMP (Menéndez Pelayo International University) awards Irene Vallejo an honorary doctorate at the Palacio de La Magdalena, with a laudation by Emilio del Río.

The author argues that reading expands freedom and sharpens intelligence and creates a personal inner space. Vallejo remains optimistic about the relevance of books: young readers, social media as a megaphone, and long queues at book signings. Rector Carlos Andradas emphasizes that books are “time machines” and that reading is an act of resistance against censorship and cutbacks.

The Menéndez Pelayo International University has awarded philologist and writer Irene Vallejo an honorary doctorate at a ceremony held in Santander, a distinction that recognizes her contribution to the humanities and her work as a promoter of reading.

During the ceremony at the Palacio de La Magdalena, the author championed the power of books and words, emphasizing that reading helps us make better decisions and build a more conscious, serene, and curious life.
