Despite the impact of screens, the publishing industry "has enjoyed better health" than others, such as music, where the dent caused by Spotify and other technologies has been of consequence.
This is the opinion of Rodrigo Arias, CEO of Penguin Random House, who pointed out that one of the good news in the Uruguayan market is that a third of the books sold are for children and young adults.
However, he acknowledged that while there used to be two or four books per year that sold more than 15,000 copies, today it is difficult to find one that does. "Today our competitors are not only the other publishers, but also the screens."
Penguin Random House currently releases 100 new titles a month. However, for its director one of the biggest challenges for the Uruguayan industry is to maintain reading levels, given that the population is not growing and education does not seem to be improving.
