The twenty-first edition of the Rómulo Gallegos International Novel Prize already has nine finalists from six different countries: Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
In this first phase of deliberation, the jury, composed of prominent figures in the literary world: Perla Suez (Argentina), Rafael Cuevas Molina (Guatemala), Fermín Goñi (Spain), Abel Prieto (Cuba), and Juan Antonio Calzadilla (Venezuela), announced the selected works that will advance to a second round to decide who will win the prestigious award.
The finalists are:

- El simulacro de los espejos by Vicente Battista (Argentina)
- Perdidos by Sergio Bizzio (Argentina)
- Voces de fondo by María Elvira González (Venezuela)
- La sed se va con el río by Andrea Mejía (Colombia)
- La forastera by Olga Merino (Spain)
- El mar que me regalas by Jorge Rodríguez (Venezuela)
- Cómo vi la mujer desnuda cuando entraba en el bosque by Martín Solares (Mexico)
- Huaco retrato by Gabriela Wiener (Peru)
For this edition, according to Celarg, 474 works from 32 countries were presented. This represents a significant increase compared to the historical maximum of 274 competing works registered in 2009, the institution stated.
