America Reads Spanish has just launched a new site offering information about children's and young adult Spanish books.  The majority of the nearly 10,000 book entries are from Spain, although it does include books from Mexico, Chile and Venezuela.  This is a great source for learning tools to foster reading at school and at home.  To visit, click here.

¡Squawk Notes!
May 2013
We are headed to Los Angeles this week for LéaLA, the largest Spanish language book fair in the U.S.  The tag line, "Los Ángeles Leen" (Angels Do Read) emphasizes its goal to promote Spanish language, literacy and culture in the U.S.  The fair is organized by the University of Guadalajara and drew 67,000 attendees last year. With a wide range of authors and panel presentations this year's event has something for everyone, including The Runaway Piggy author James Luna.  So if you're in L.A. this weekend, visítenos!

Summer Reading....in Spanish!

Studies show that students who read over the summer do better in school in the fall and reading in Spanish will maintain those biliteracy skills that kids worked so hard to develop.  Over the next several months we will be making recommendations for summer reading in Spanish.  To kick off summer reading, here are a couple of our favorites:
El libro de Óscar and four other Oscar titles in this series featuring a curious and mischievous opossum, are now available with a cutout puppet.  Go to Óscar's Facebook Page for the puppet cutout and lots of fun activities perfect for summer reading programs.
El libro de Óscar
was recently selected by Mexico's Secretary of Education for their pre-school reading program. Felicitaciones, Óscar! Spanish, ages 4 and up, $11.95, Editorial Progreso.  To order, click here.

Felicia y Odicia:
We love this book about attitude!  It's not too preachy, humorous and full of bright illustrations.  The always happy Felicia takes on the challenge of getting the perennially angry Odicia to smile.  The question is which personality will win out over the other.  Spanish, ages 6 and up, $9.95, Ediciones Castillo/Grupo Macmillan. A Resource We Love: The Bookies
The Bookies is our favorite Denver bookstore for kids, families and teachers. They have the largest selection of children's books in the United States, and a third of their titles are devoted to teachers and educators. In addition to their wide selection of picture books, novels, historical, Spanish and multicultural fiction, audio and adult fiction and non fiction books, they offer toys, games, gifts, cards, costumes, puppets, and more.

The staff is passionate, knowledgeable and friendly.  They will ship orders and offer a10% discount on credit cards, and a15% discount on cash or checks.
Visit The Bookies on Facebook for more information about their in-store book fairs, story times and upcoming events, or to sign up for their monthly newsletter. Phone: 303-759-1117.
