Author of an extensive work focused on the workers' struggle and immigration; he was also deputy for Iniciativa in the Catalan parliament.
The writer, journalist and politician Ignasi Riera has died at the age of 85 in Madrid, city where he lived since 2003, as confirmed this Friday by the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC), entity of which he was an honorary member. Prolific author, and specialist in social and cultural criticism, Riera published fifty works such as novels, short stories, essays and biographies.
Born in Barcelona in 1940, he graduated in Philosophy and Letters from the Companya de Jesús de Sant Cugat del Vallès and in Romance Philology from the University of Barcelona. After studying at the seminary, he eventually abandoned Catholicism for Marxism and moved to Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona), where he served as councilman of Culture for the PSUC and IC-IEV for fifteen years. He was also a member of the Catalan Parliament between 1988 and 1992.
