The Instituto Cervantes is holding this colloquium to mark the centenary of the writer Carmen Martín Gaite.
Martín Gaite is known for her ability to explore human relationships and everyday life in her works. Her first novel, Entre visillos (1958), won the Nadal Prize and is a portrait of the lives of young women in a provincial town. Other notable works include El cuarto de atrás (1978), which won the National Literature Prize, and Nubosidad variable (1992).
In addition to her work as a novelist, Martín Gaite was a prolific essayist and translator. Her essays, such as Usos amorosos del dieciocho en España (1972) and Usos amorosos de la postguerra española (1987), offer in-depth analyses of Spanish society.
Throughout her career, she received numerous awards, including the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature in 1988. Her literary legacy remains a source of inspiration and study for many.
