Manuel Barrios's 'La espuela', a novel whose social criticism stands out, is being revived

The Seville-based publisher Athenaica has reissued La espuela in an edition featuring a prologue by Alberto González Troyano.

Manuel Barrios (San Fernando, 1924–Seville, 2012) is not only remembered for the ingenious journalistic articles he published for ABC for many years, but also for being one of the members of the so-called "narraluces" generation, a group of extraordinary novelists in which other writers of the stature of Manuel Ferrand, Alfonso Grosso, Luis Berenguer, Julio Manuel de la Rosa, José María Requena, Antonio Burgos, Fernando Quiñones, José Luis Ortiz de Lanzagorta, José María Vaz de Soto, and José Manuel Caballero Bonald also shone.

Recently, the Seville-based publisher Athenaica reissued the novel "La espuela" (1965), in which Barrios updated the character of the young gentleman and imbued the plot with a strong sense of social criticism, all within an impeccable literary style. The University of Seville's Center for Cultural Initiatives (Cicus) hosted the presentation of the work this Tuesday.
