April 30 is 'Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros'

"Children's Day/Book Day" is an every day celebration of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. The goal is to emphasize the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

On April 30 many countries celebrate Children's Day, as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In March 1996, while interviewed in Tucson, Arizona, the author and poet Pat Mora learned about the holiday and realizing that the United States had nothing similar, she proposed linking Children's Day, the celebration of childhood and children, with literacy and bilingualism, creating a new holiday: El día de los niños/El día de los libros.
