The American website Bookshop.org launched its digital bookstore for independent bookstores yesterday, Tuesday, January 28th. The new platform allows bookstores to sell e-books directly to consumers.
The digital retailer, which has a profit-sharing model with its member independent bookstores, had revenues of $44 million in 2024, distributing $7 million. Its CEO, Andy Hunter, believes that digital book sales could have an upward impact on these figures, according to the digital media Publishers' Weekly.
'Independent booksellers work with margins of maybe 2% in a good year," Hunter told the American media. "E-books represent between 10% and 15% of the market. If they can represent up to 5% of an independent bookstore's revenue - if we manage to reach that proportion of the market - it could be a big change'.
