Fernando del Rey and Manuel Álvarez Tardío, Francisco Umbral Prize for the best book of 2024 for 'Fuego cruzado: La primavera de 1936.’

History reminds us that democracy is a very fragile thing.

The essay by both historians, which analyzes the violence in Spain between the elections of February 1936 and the coup d'état of July, has received the prize, endowed with 12,000 euros and awarded by the Francisco Umbral Foundation.

'The academic rigor and the wealth of documentation that underlies a fluid and attractive prose' are the reasons and the words of the jury that this Wednesday awarded the Francisco Umbral Book of the Year Award 2024, endowed with 12,000 euros and a statue designed by Alberto Corazón, to ‘Fuego Cruzado. La primavera de 1936’ (Galaxia Gutenberg) by Fernando del Rey and Manuel Álvarez Tardío, an essay which highlights: “it sheds light on a decisive chapter in the history of Spain that does not ignore the human scale of the events that took place in the spring of 1936”.
