Carlos Salem presented “Tango del torturador arrepentido” during the Semana Negra de Gijón.

Carlos Salem arrived at Gijón with a new novel under his arm “Tango del torturador arrepentido”, for him his best novel yet.

A work that has taken him a long time to write because he did not feel ready. He has had to let time pass to be able to face with experience some facts that put his protagonists to shame. “There was state terrorism and they ended up pardoning many murderers,” says the Argentine writer.

The novel narrates what happened in Buenos Aires in 1978. Two years after the coup d'état, thousands of people were held in clandestine detention centers. Most of them would not come out alive. Julio, young son of a powerful industrialist, is one of them, one more “desaparecido” (disappeared).  His life is saved by Major Morales, in charge of the barracks, because he reminds him of his own son who died in an accident. Three months later, Julio is “released”, but he is no longer the same. He has made a decision.
