Javier Cercas travels with Pope Francis in his new book.

A new book by Javier Cercas will soon be on bookstore shelves. Random House will publish “El loco de Dios en Mongolia” in April 2025.

The novel is based on Pope Francis' trip to Mongolia, of which the author himself was part of the expedition.

“No writer has ever had the opportunity to write a book like this, among other reasons because the Vatican had never opened its doors wide to a writer (and much less to an atheist writer like me): one of my obsessions while writing these pages was to live up to that unique privilege,” Cercas told the media.

Pilar Reyes, editorial director of the label, celebrates the news and recognizes that “for Penguin Random House it is great to publish Javier Cercas again, even more so to do it with a text in which culture in Spanish, Pope Francis' idiomatic universe, is such a protagonist. A book that will be read with equal interest in Spain and Latin America, publishing markets where our Group enjoys a leading position.”
