Begoña Oro and Renée Ferrer de Arréllaga win the Cervantes Chico Award for Children and Young Adult Literature 2024.

Begoña Oro has won the XXVIII Cervantes Chico Award for her long and successful career in the world of children and young adult literature.

Likewise, in this edition, the Cervantes Chico Ibero-American children and young adult literature award went to the Paraguayan author Renée Ferrer de Arréllaga.

The jury, chaired by the mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, considered Oro to be “a clear example of effort and love for literature” because not only has she created characters and series that “all of us who are mothers and fathers have shared with our sons and daughters, such as the adventures of Rasi the squirrel or Troti the funny unicorn, but she is also an expert writer of very important juvenile novels,” explained Piquet.

“Writing for children is not easy. It is a demanding audience that deserves the best, although, as so often happens with “children's stuff”, it is not always appreciated. I have never been bothered by that certain invisibility. The affection and enthusiasm of the little readers for the characters we create is a gigantic prize that I often consider undeserved,” said Oro when she was presented with the award.
