granted by the federal Ministry of Culture and the National Autonomous University of Mexico to recognize writers who, through their work, enrich the literary heritage of humanity.
Luis García Montero becomes the eighth person to win the award. Previous recipients have been: Mario Vargas Llosa (2012), Sergio Ramírez (2014), Eduardo Lizalde (2016), Luis Goytisolo (2018), Luisa Valenzuela (2019), Diamela Eltit (2020), Margo Glantz (2022) and Elena Poniatowska (2023).
The jury, made up of writers Beatriz Espejo, Rosa Montero, Élmer Mendoza, Fernando Fernández and Elena Poniatowska, decided, by majority, to award the prize to the author of “Además” and “Mañana no será lo que Dios quiera,” for "his extraordinary ability to turn individual experience into a collective experience, as well as for the beauty, finesse and precision of his language".
