The Madrid Book Fair 2024 has reached its 83rd edition, held between May 31 and June 16.
Dedicated to sport, on the occasion of the Olympic Games, its motto was "Entrena tu mente, lee tu cuerpo" (Train your mind, read your body). With several cross-cutting activities between signings, and accompanied by hot weather at the beginning and a much milder and rainy one afterwards, the Paseo de Coches of the Retiro Park once again gathered thousands of readers and national and international writers in its 359 booths.
This is my report of my visit to this essential literary event on Saturday, June 8. Madrid Book Fair 2024 - 83rd edition. A bit of history:
The first Madrid Book Fair was organized in 1933 as part of the Cervantes Week events, from April 23 to 29, and the first booths were set up in Paseo de Recoletos. Because of the civil war there was a break that lasted until 1944, when it was renamed the National Book Fair. It was much later, in 1967, when it was moved to its current location in the Retiro Park. And once again in 1982, the Fair was renamed Feria del Libro de Madrid and is organized by the Associations of Bookstores and Publishers of Madrid and the Distributors FANDE.
