Cuban poet Carlos Manuel Gómez wins the XVIII Antonio Gala International Poetry Prize.

Cuban writer Carlos Manuel Gómez, 33, has been declared winner of the XVIII Antonio Gala International Poetry Prize with his work “El libro de los golpes,” which will be published by the publishing house El Toro Celeste soon.

The jury highlighted the Cuban author's work as “a collection of poems of the highest quality, which shocks and moves us with its social conscience and symbolic depth”. And: “The poet uses the poetic word to vindicate the values of solidarity, fraternity and human dignity, without falling into the lyrical weaknesses that are usually associated with the so-called social poetry”.

The award, granted by the City Council of Alhaurín el Grande to honor the memory of the writer and adopted son of the municipality, Antonio Gala, will be presented on June 20 at the Casa Museo Antonio Gala in the town of Malaga. The award has a prize of 6,000 euros and seeks to recognize young authors between the ages of 18 and 35.
