The Colombian poet, writer and playwright Piedad Bonnett, has won the XXXIII Queen Sofia Prize for Ibero-American Poetry, jointly organized by Patrimonio Nacional and the University of Salamanca since 1992.
The jury has valued that her poetry “shows a solid and organic trajectory, with great coherence in her poetic work”.
The manager of Patrimonio Nacional, María Dolores Menéndez, announced the jury's decision and stressed that Bonnett is “a current voice of reference in Latin American poetry with an elaborate treatment of language that allows her to approach life experience with depth and beauty and to respond with humanity to the tragedy of life. Her poetry is luminous, even when she deals with difficult subjects, such as heartbreak, war, loss, or mourning".
For Juan Manuel Corchado, rector of the University of Salamanca, the awarding of this prize is one of his first acts since taking office and is “a clear reflection of the value that cultural heritage has for me, in general, and this prize in particular”. Corchado has used his speech to express his “firm commitment to the Queen Sofia Prize for Ibero-American Poetry and the future projection of the agreement” signed with Patrimonio Nacional.
