The best surrealism books to celebrate the centenary of the art movement.

The publication on October 15, 1924, of the 'Manifiesto del surrealismo' (or 'First Manifesto of Surrealism') served as a theoretical framework for a movement that sought to shake up society in all its facets: from politics to literature and art.

On the occasion of its centenary, El Grito makes a selection of essential books to understand the depth and dimension of a current whose shadow stretches to the present day.

Surrealist literature can be approached from every conceivable angle: from the purely theoretical to less obvious positions such as that of Leonora Carrington, who was committed to an asylum in Santander where she was subjected to all kinds of torture, or that of the Egyptian Joyce Mansour, a surrealist poet of raw and erotic verse, who was forced to lead a double life.

Below, we offer a selection of essentials to fully immerse yourself in this movement.
