Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza, Pulitzer Prize winner for 'El invencible Verano de Liliana.'

Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza is one of the winners of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize, announced yesterday, Monday, May 6, by Columbia University in the United States.

The prizes are awarded on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Prize Board. The book ‘El invencible verano de Liliana’ (Random House, 2021) was the winner in the Memoirs and Autobiography category. In the United States it was published by Hogarth Publishers.

The book tells the story of how Cristina Rivera Garza took 30 years to open the files of the investigation of the femicide of her younger sister Liliana, which occurred in 1990.  The book has already won awards such as the Premio Iberoamericano de Letras Jose Donoso 2021, the Premio Nuevo León Alfonso Reyes 2021, the Premio Xavier Villaurrutia de Escritores para Escritores 2021, the Premio Mazatlán de Literatura 2022, and the Premio Rodolfo Walsh 2022. She was also a finalist for the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2023.

The Pulitzer also awards the best journalistic works of 2023 in 15 specific categories. Winners receive $15,000. Among the top journalism honorees are The New York Times and ProPublica. A full list of winners can be found at the end of the article.
