'El desierto blanco,' by Luis López Carrasco, Herralde Novel Prize 2023

Yesterday, Monday, November 6, the Murcian filmmaker and writer Luis López Carrasco was announced winner of the 41st edition of the Herralde Novel Prize, organized by the Anagrama publishing house and endowed with 25,000 euros, for his work ‘El desierto blanco.’

In addition, the jury has chosen as a finalist the novel by Argentine filmmaker Camila Fabbri: ‘La reina del baile.’

Before reaching the final decision, the jury, composed of Ana Cañellas (Cálamo bookstore, Zaragoza), Gonzalo Pontón Gijón, Marta Sanz, Juan Pablo Villalobos, and the editor Silvia Sesé selected, in addition to the two previously named novels, the following three among the 1,566 submitted to the forty-first edition of the Herralde Novel Prize, organized by Editorial Anagrama: ‘Olvidar, temer, pasar página,’ by Soledad Azerkán (pseudonym), ‘Ojo malo,’ by Cañandonga (pseudonym), and ‘Los idólatras y todos los que aman,’ by Adriana Murad Konings.

The Mexican writer Juan Pablo Villalobos, member of the jury, described the work of Luis López Carrasco submitted for the prize under the pseudonym F. Román: “All futuristic novels describe our present fears, but many do so with pessimism, preaching imminent catastrophe and assuming defeat beforehand.”
