Spanish is the language of almost 500 million people

The health of the Spanish language and its growth, both in Spanish-speaking countries and in other territories, are the thematic focus of the annual report “El español en el mundo 2023,”..

which contains the most relevant data on the international presence of our language and its projections, and which was presented by the Cervantes Institute on Monday, October 30.

That Spanish is the second mother tongue on the planet, after Mandarin Chinese, is “a reason for pride, but it cannot mean complacency,” said Luis García Montero, the director of Cervantes, who emphasized the need to reinforce the weight of the language in the world and consolidate its prestige and presence in science and technology.

The study “El español: una lengua viva. Informe 2023,” prepared by professor and researcher David Fernández Vítores, under the coordination of the Academic Directorate of the Cervantes Institute, opens the yearbook with updated data related to Spanish and demographics, its teaching as a foreign language, presence on the Internet, economic influence, cultural activity and scientific dissemination, among other aspects.
