Editorial Juventud, Gold Medal for Cultural Merit of the city of Barcelona

Barcelona City Council has unanimously approved on Friday, October 27, to award its highest distinction, the Gold Medal for Cultural Merit, to Editorial Juventud in the year marking 100 years of its foundation.

This recognition, in their hometown, is added to the National Award for the Best Cultural Editorial Work, received this same year, granted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain.

Editorial Juventud was founded in Barcelona on October 5, 1923, and initially directed by Josep Zendrera. As its name indicates, it began specializing in children and young adult literature. The founder's daughter, Conchita Zendrera Tomás, who ran the children's department for forty years, obtained the rights to such popular authors as Enid Blyton (The Secret Seven, The Five), Zane Gray and James Oliver Curwood, whose fame she helped spread, and collections as famous as the Tintin comic albums.
