Today what will be Vargas Llosa's last novel arrives in bookstores in all Spanish-speaking countries

“Le dedico mi silencio” (Alfaguara, 2023), the latest novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, arrives today simultaneously, in bookstores in all Spanish-speaking countries.

This will be his last novel, although not his last work. In a postscript on this latest book the 87-year-old novelist writes: «I think I have finished this book. Now I would like to write an essay about Sartre, who was my teacher when I was young. "It will be the last thing I write."

“Le dedico mi silencio” is the twentieth novel of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, who published his first novel, “La ciudad y los perros” (Seix Barral, 1963), 60 years ago. The novel tells the journey of Toño Azpilcueta, a connoisseur of native music, who finds in Lalo Molfino, an exceptional guitarist, validation of his deepest beliefs. Molfino's art gives meaning to Azpilcueta's intense love for Peruvian genres such as waltzes, marineras, polkas and huaynos, placing it in a broader social context. The action takes place in the 90s, when Peru suffered the terrorist actions of the “Sendero Luminoso” (Shining Path) and the protagonist was looking for "a country united by music."
